Four ways to base yourself

Your choice of base decides how much of your day you spend on the road. At Milford itself you wake up at the fiord. In Te Anau you are about 2 hours away. From Queenstown it is about 5 hours, according to the Milford Sound Lodge. You can also sleep on a boat in the fiord, which is a different kind of stay and has its own page.

This site does not sell rooms and lists no hotel prices. Room and pitch rates change often, so look at the operators directly. What follows is how the options differ and what each one requires.

At Milford Sound

The lodge and its campervan park.

Milford Sound Lodge offers Riverside and Mountain View chalets, two-bedroom suites and a campervan park. The Riverside and Mountain View chalets take a maximum of 2 adults, with no children or infants. The suites usually sleep 4 people, and under conditions one extra child under 14 can be added.

Check-in is after 15:00 and check-out is at 11:00. You can pay for an early arrival at 12:00 or a late departure at 13:00, but the lodge does not list a price. The lodge offers free fibre Wi-Fi, though performance depends on the weather and surroundings. There are no grocery shops in the village, so bring food. The nearest supermarket is in Te Anau.

The lodge's own FAQ gives the distance to the terminal as about 1.5 km in one place and 2.3 km (45 minutes on foot) in another. Ask the lodge which applies before you plan on walking. Pets are not allowed without special permission, and leaving an animal in the car is not an accepted solution.

The lodge is not the only option at the fiord, because overnight boats also sleep guests. Camping is not allowed in the bus car park. Read the overnight cruise page for the boats.

Overnight boats at a glance

Milford Mariner

RealNZ lists it from NZ$669 to 699, depending on the page. It takes 64 guests, departs at 16:00 and returns at 09:15 the next day. Linen, towels, dinner and breakfast are included.

Fiordland Jewel

It has 9 cabins with private bathrooms and carries up to 22 passengers. The season runs from 31 October 2026 to late April 2027. Check-in is at 14:35, and a return van transfer from Queenstown or Te Anau costs NZ$350 per person in 2026/27.

Overnight parking at the bus car park costs NZ$30, from 15:30 until 11:00 the next day. The Jewel operator lists a separate rule for the main car park from 14:00, also NZ$30 and paid at the terminal. Confirm which applies with your operator.

Te Anau or Queenstown

The two towns most visitors choose.

Te Anau offers hotels, hostels, campgrounds and restaurants, and it is closer to the fiord than Queenstown. It is also the start of the Milford Road. See the Te Anau page for the glowworm caves and day trips from town.

Queenstown is further away, but it combines easily with a coach day or a flight, as the Queenstown page shows. If you continue your trip afterwards, the Mount Cook guide on where to stay and the Franz Josef guide on where to stay cover those bases.
