Kayaking in Milford Sound at a glance
The main guided option is a sea kayak trip run by Rosco's Milford Kayaks. Its Milford Cruiser lasts 3 hours in total, with up to 2 hours of paddling. You meet at the end of Deepwater Basin Road. The company supplies a double sea kayak, a lifejacket, a spray skirt and paddling clothing.
The paddle is guided, and you share a double kayak with another person. Prices below are those published for 2026 and can change.

Who can go
Age and weight limits depend on the tour.
| Tour | Minimum age | Adult price (2026) | Other limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Milford Cruiser | 8 years | NZ$205 (NZ$165 for ages 8 to 14) | Children over 25 kg; under 18 shares a kayak with an adult |
| Sunriser Classic | 14 years | – | Maximum 110 kg and 1.93 m per person |
| Paddle and Walk | 14 years | – | Maximum 110 kg and 1.93 m per person |
| Water-taxi supported tours | 16 years | – | Maximum 110 kg and 1.93 m per person |
| Kayak on an overnight cruise | 10 years | Part of the booking | Under 16 with an adult; weather permitting |
The Milford Cruiser page says children under 18 paddle with an adult, while the company's FAQ says under 16 and gives 25 kg as the minimum. If your child is close to a limit, ask the company before you book. The kayak on the overnight boat is a different activity from this stand-alone tour.

Season and weather
Not only a summer activity.
The operator describes a winter season from April to October and a summer season from November to March. Which route runs on a given date is something to check when you book. Rain alone does not cancel a trip, since the fiord is a wet place. Strong wind can.
If Rosco's cancels for safety or weather reasons, you receive a full refund. For the Day Safari, the company may instead offer a cruise plus a partial refund. Because the water is wind-sensitive, leave a spare day in your plans rather than booking the kayak on the day you have to leave.
Milford Sound Tourism describes many waterfalls that appear only when it rains, so a wet day changes the view rather than ending it. Dress for being wet. The weather page shows the monthly averages.
Rules around wildlife
The fiord is a marine reserve and seals use the shore.
Seals and sea lions
DOC recommends keeping at least 20 m away when you can. Do not touch them and do not block their way to the sea. Boats should stay at least 20 m from the shore where seals live.
Swimming
Swimmers should stay at least 5 m from the water's edge where seals are. Do not swim with groups of dolphins that include young, and do not swim with whales.
Sandflies
DOC recommends sandfly repellent on the Milford foreshore walk. Bring some for the meeting point and any stops on land.
Your guide explains the rules on the water. If you also plan to take a cruise, see the cruises page, and for a night on the fiord, the overnight cruise page.
Planning the day
Getting there and combining activities.
The meeting point is at the end of the Deepwater Basin Road, so work out how you will get there when you book. From Te Anau the Milford Road is 120 km and takes at least 2 hours. Check the NZTA road status before you leave. Details are on the Milford Road page.
A kayak trip and a cruise can share a stay: the cruise covers more of the fiord, and the kayak gives you one stretch of it at water level. If you travel on to the West Coast or the alpine side of the island, those places have their own guides: Franz Josef and Fox Glacier and Mount Cook.
Milford Sound kayaking: frequently asked questions
How much does the Milford Sound kayak tour cost?
The Milford Cruiser costs NZ$205 from age 15 and NZ$165 for ages 8 to 14 in 2026, according to the operator. For the longer routes, check the current price with the operator.
Do I need kayaking experience?
The tour is guided in a double sea kayak, and the company supplies the kayak, lifejacket, spray skirt and paddling clothing. Ask the operator which route suits your fitness.
Does rain cancel the kayak trip?
Rain alone does not cancel it. Strong wind can. If the operator cancels for safety or weather, you receive a full refund.
Can children go kayaking?
The Milford Cruiser takes children from 8 years who weigh over 25 kg, with an adult in the kayak. Other tours start at 14 or 16 years.
Is the kayak on the overnight boat the same thing?
No. The overnight cruise offers a kayak or a tender boat in good weather, from age 10, and under 16 with an adult. It is part of the overnight booking, not the stand-alone Rosco's tour.
