Sleeping on the fiord

An overnight cruise gives you the fiord in the evening and early morning, when the day boats are gone from the water. You board in the afternoon, eat dinner on the ship, sleep in a cabin and return the next morning. Two ships run this trip in Milford Sound: the RealNZ Milford Mariner and the Fiordland Jewel from Fiordland Discovery.

The Mariner is the larger ship with 64 overnight guests. The Jewel is small, with 9 cabins and a maximum of 22 passengers. Both include dinner and breakfast, and both offer kayaking or a tender boat when the weather allows.

What each ship is like

Size, rules and small print.

Milford Mariner

The Mariner has twin and double cabins with a private bathroom, a solo rate and a limited number of four-berth areas. Bedding and towels, dinner and breakfast are included. Kayaking and the tender boat depend on the weather. Kayaking is for ages 10 and over, and under 16s go with an adult.

Operator pages differ on winter. The detail page promotes one night every day, while a July 2026 blog post says two nights in winter. Check which applies to your dates.

Fiordland Jewel

The Jewel is for ages 6 and over, at the full adult fare. Younger children are not suitable. Paying by credit card adds 2 percent. For 2026/27 a return van transfer from Queenstown or Te Anau costs NZ$350 per person. The van does not run on 24, 25 and 31 December or 1 January.

Parking

The Jewel's operator lists the main car park from 2 p.m. at NZ$30 for the night, paid at the terminal. Bus bays are not available for early check-in. The general overnight rule is separate: the bus car park from 3:30 p.m. at NZ$30 until 11 a.m. the next day. Camping is not allowed. Earlier ship departures need special instructions, so ask your operator which rule applies.

Getting there

The road from Te Anau is 120 km and needs at least 2 hours, with no shops or fuel on the way. Fill up in Te Anau first. The road can close for snow and avalanche risk, so check the current NZTA status before you leave.

Overnight on Doubtful Sound

A different fiord with its own ships.

RealNZ also runs overnight trips in Doubtful Sound. The detail page lists NZ$799 and the overview NZ$749. The trip leaves from Manapouri, with a boat across Lake Manapouri and a bus over the Wilmot Pass. The Fiordland Navigator takes 52 guests in private cabins with a bathroom. The Milford Wanderer takes 36 guests in twin sleeping areas with shared bathrooms. The underground power station visit at Manapouri has been closed indefinitely, so do not plan around it.
