How a Milford Sound cruise works
Day cruises leave from the Milford Sound Visitor Terminal and sail the fiord below Mitre Peak, which the Department of Conservation gives as 1,692 m above the water. Several operators run boats of different sizes. The big difference is not the scenery. It is the boat size, the length of the trip, what is served and the departure times.
You still have to reach Milford first. The Milford Road is the only road in, so a cruise ticket is one part of a longer day. If you are driving yourself, read the Milford Road guide before you pick a departure time. Piopiotahi Marine Reserve covers the northern side of the fiord up to Dale Point, not the whole fiord.

The Cruise Milford page shows NZ$189 in its price header and NZ$179 in its FAQ, so confirm the figure at checkout. A from-price is not a final price for every date, and it does not show free seats on your day. Tea and coffee come with the Mitre Peak and Cruise Milford boats, and Cruise Milford adds biscuits. Buffet and picnic options on Southern Discoveries boats are paid extras.

Which departure suits a day trip
Coach tours and flights set their own boat slot, so you rarely choose. If you drive yourself, allow for the road, parking and the walk to the terminal before the boat leaves.
Tours compared →Stirling Falls, waterfalls and rain
Stirling Falls is a name you will see on many cruise pages. Which waterfalls a boat passes, and how close it goes, is decided by each operator and by the conditions on the day, so read the product description rather than assume it.
Southern Discoveries states that it sails in rain and that temporary waterfalls grow when it rains. Milford Sound Tourism also describes many waterfalls that form only in rain. Rain still means a wet deck and lower cloud, so bring a waterproof jacket. If an operator cancels because of weather or a road closure, Cruise Milford offers a refund or a new date. Other operators set their own terms.
On the water, tours may meet seals, dolphins and Fiordland crested penguins (tawaki). RealNZ does not guarantee sightings. See the weather and best time guide for monthly rain averages.

Milford Sound cruises: frequently asked questions
How long is a Milford Sound cruise?
The day boats above run from 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes on the water. The whole day is much longer, because of the road to Milford. A coach day trip from Queenstown takes about 12 hours.
How much does a Milford Sound cruise cost?
Advertised adult from-prices in October 2026 run from NZ$152 for a self-drive and cruise offer to NZ$389 for a premium boat. Children usually cost less. Prices change by date and product.
Do I need to book in advance?
RealNZ recommends booking ahead. Check availability for your date before you plan around a departure.
Is there an entry fee for Milford Sound?
No Milford entry fee for international visitors is in force. The Department of Conservation describes a law change and local consultation held from June to August 2026. The international visitor levy of NZ$100 is separate and is paid with a visa or NZeTA, not at Milford.
Do cruises run in the rain?
Southern Discoveries sails in rain. Operators can still cancel for weather or a road closure, and terms differ. Read the conditions before you pay.
Where do I park for a cruise?
Use the main car park for the shortest walk, or the free Deepwater Basin car park if you accept a longer walk and limited spaces. Costs and rules are listed above.
