Flying to Milford Sound: the options
There are three kinds of Milford Sound flight. A plane flies you from Queenstown, you cruise the fiord and you fly back, often on a different route. A helicopter flies a scenic route with landings in the mountains. A seaplane leaves from Lake Te Anau and passes over the Milford Track. The fly and cruise combinations replace a long coach day with a half day.
Prices below are the operators' published figures for 2026. Some add a fuel or payment surcharge that is not in the headline price, so the table lists those separately. Flights depend on weather. A cancelled flight is not the same as a rainy cruise, and the road is a separate question: see the Milford Road guide for the drive.

Air Milford's rates are valid from 1 October 2026 to 30 September 2027. With the surcharge, the 9:30 a.m. adult fare comes to NZ$854 and the 11:30 a.m. fare to NZ$919 on paper, but check the final total at checkout. Heliworks prices are valid from 1 April 2026 to 30 September 2027. The seaplane price is a 2026 listing, so confirm the price when you book.

The details that change the day.
Fly, cruise, fly with Glenorchy Air
Departures are at 9:00 a.m. all year, at 11:30 a.m. from April to October and at 1:30 p.m. from November to March. A window seat and the transfers to and from Queenstown Airport are included. Children aged 0 to 2 under 15 kg fly free. Check the checkout for other charges.

The trip takes 5 hours with a cruise of about 90 minutes. Morning tea, a picnic or a drink comes with each departure. The 1:30 p.m. flight at NZ$795 runs in summer only.
Helicopter with alpine landing
Heliworks checks the weather one hour before. It needs a minimum number of passengers, weighs guests, and may change the route or landing sites. There is no cancellation fee if weather rules out the flight. A surcharge applies for credit card and contactless payments.

Southern Lakes Helicopters lists landings at Lake Quill and Lake Erskine. A fuel surcharge has applied since 1 April 2026, so check the total when you book.

Low cloud can stop a flight or change where a helicopter can land. No operator promises a landing. A weather cancellation by the operator is a different case from the rain that feeds waterfalls on a cruise.

How long does a Milford Sound flight take?
Glenorchy Air lists 80 minutes of flying and a 105-minute cruise. Air Milford needs 5 hours in total. The Heliworks helicopter flight takes 75 minutes, and the Te Anau helicopter trip 1 hour 45 minutes.
Is the cruise included in the flight price?

What happens if the weather is bad?
Operators cancel flights for weather. Heliworks lists no cancellation fee in that case. Terms differ, so read them before you pay.

Yes, with age limits that differ by operator. Glenorchy Air prices ages 3 to 14 separately, and Heliworks has fares for ages 3 to 11 and for ages 0 to 2.
