How Milford Sound tours differ
Almost every Milford Sound tour is one of three things: a coach trip with a cruise, a flight with a cruise, or a self-drive day where you book only the boat. The cruise is similar across them. What changes is how you get to the fiord, how long the day is and what you pay.
The boat trip itself lasts about 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours. The whole day does not. A coach and cruise day from Queenstown takes about 12 hours. From Te Anau it is about 7 hours. A fly and cruise trip from Queenstown takes roughly 5 hours. Compare the total time, not the time on the water.

The tour types in detail
What each one involves.
Coach and cruise from Queenstown
The drive to Milford takes about 5 hours depending on stops, so a day trip is long. RealNZ lists 12 hours in total, and Pure Milford offers the same combination. Both are set up for people who do not want to drive the mountain road themselves.
Milford Sound from Queenstown →Coach and cruise from Te Anau
Te Anau is about 2 hours from Milford, which is why this day is shorter. RealNZ names 85 Lakefront Drive as its central meeting point. Do not assume pickup at your accommodation unless the booking says so.
Te Anau guide →Self-drive and cruise
You drive the 120 km from Te Anau and book only the boat. Plan at least 2 hours of driving, and about 3 hours once you include parking and the walk to the ship. Parking at the main car park costs NZ$10 per hour for entry before 3 p.m. and NZ$5 per hour after.
Milford Road guide →Fly, cruise, fly
Glenorchy Air lists NZ$789 for adults aged 15 and over and NZ$639 for children aged 3 to 14. Children aged 0 to 2 under 15 kg are free. The flight totals 80 minutes and the ship 105 minutes. Departures are at 9:00 a.m. all year, 11:30 a.m. from April to October and 1:30 p.m. from November to March. A window seat and airport transfers are included.
Air Milford has a dated tariff from 1 October 2026 to 30 September 2027: NZ$795 at 9:30 a.m., NZ$860 at 11:30 a.m. and NZ$795 at 1:30 p.m. in summer only. Children pay NZ$550 to 595. A fuel surcharge of NZ$59 per person applies from 13 April 2026 and is not in those prices. That makes NZ$854 or NZ$919 for an adult. Morning tea, a picnic or a drink is included on each departure.
Scenic flights guide →Helicopter
Heliworks lists a 75-minute Milford Sound Express with one alpine landing: NZ$1,395 from age 12, NZ$980 for ages 3 to 11 and NZ$700 for ages 0 to 2. The prices are valid from 1 April 2026 to 30 September 2027. The operator makes a weather check 1 hour before, applies a weight check and may change the route or landing spots. No cancellation fee applies if weather stops the flight.
What to check before you book
The details matter more than the headline price.
Total time and starting point
A 2-hour cruise can sit inside a 12-hour day. Check the meeting point, the departure time and the return time before you compare prices.
What is included
Meals differ. Pure Milford includes a picnic on its coach and cruise offer, and Mitre Peak Cruises includes tea and coffee. Air Milford includes morning tea, a picnic or a drink. Read each listing for food and for the fuel surcharge.
Weather and the road
Boats usually sail in rain, and flights are weather-dependent. Cruise Milford offers a refund or rebooking if it cancels because of weather or a road closure. The Milford Road has closed for avalanche risk: NZTA documented closures between the lower Hollyford Road and Donne River from 26 to 30 August 2026. Check the current NZTA road status before you drive.
Weather and best time →Fees that are not in the tour price
No Milford entry fee for international visitors has been introduced. The Department of Conservation describes a legislative process, with local consultation from June to August 2026. Boat tickets, parking and hut fees are priced separately. The NZ$100 international visitor levy, where it applies, is paid with your visa or NZeTA and is not a Milford fee.

Milford Sound tours: frequently asked questions
What is the best Milford Sound tour?
That depends on your starting point and your budget. A coach and cruise day suits people who do not want to drive. A fly and cruise trip saves time. A self-drive day with a boat ticket costs least. The table above compares examples, not a ranking.
How much do Milford Sound tours cost?
Published adult from-prices in 2026 range from NZ$152 for a self-drive and cruise to NZ$1,395 for a helicopter flight with one alpine landing. Coach and cruise days from Te Anau or Queenstown fall between NZ$236 and NZ$319. These are from-prices, not final prices for every date.
How long is a Milford Sound day trip?
From Queenstown by coach and cruise, RealNZ lists 12 hours. From Te Anau it lists 7 hours. A fly and cruise trip from Queenstown takes about 5 hours with Air Milford. The cruise itself is about 2 hours of that.
Do I need to book in advance?
RealNZ recommends booking ahead. No official rule requires a boat ticket just to visit Milford. Public listings do not show free seats on your date, so check availability first.
Is there an entry fee for Milford Sound?
No. A fee for international visitors has not been introduced. It is still a legislative process. Boat, parking and hut prices are separate.
