Milford Sound in a nutshell
Milford Sound, called Piopiotahi in Māori, lies in the north-west of Fiordland National Park on New Zealand's South Island. It is a fiord shaped by glaciers, and the region belongs to the Te Wahipounamu South West New Zealand World Heritage Area. Mitre Peak rises 1,692 m directly from the water. The Piopiotahi Marine Reserve covers 690 ha along the northern shore, up to Dale Point.
The Milford Road is the only road to the fiord. It runs 120 km from Te Anau, and the pure driving time is at least 2 hours. Plan about 3 hours once you add stops, parking and the walk to the terminal. There are no shops or fuel stations between Te Anau and Milford, so fill the tank and bring water and snacks.

What this guide covers
The fiord, the road to it and the towns around it.
This guide covers Milford Sound and Fiordland: day cruises, overnight boats, kayaking, scenic flights, the Milford Road with the Homer Tunnel, the Milford Track, Te Anau, Doubtful Sound and day trips from Queenstown. It is an independent site. It is not run by the Department of Conservation, a park authority, a transport agency or any cruise, tour or flight operator. Prices are in New Zealand dollars (NZ$) as advertised in 2026, and they change.
Other parts of the South Island have their own guides. For the West Coast glaciers, see Franz Josef and Fox Glacier. For the alpine side of the island, see Mount Cook and Lake Tekapo. This site stays with the fiords and the road that leads to them.

Points where older guides and forum posts are out of date.
No Milford entry fee yet
DOC is working on a charge for international visitors at four places, including Piopiotahi, but it needs a change in the law first. Local consultation ran from June to August 2026. No fixed entry price exists. Many international visitors pay the NZ$100 International Visitor Levy with their visa or NZeTA, and that is not a Milford fee.
Flight prices can exclude a surcharge
Air Milford adds NZ$59 per person on top of the listed fare from 13 April 2026. Other operators mention fuel surcharges without a figure. Read the full price before you pay.
Scenic flights →The Chasm is not fully restored
DOC describes a shortened walk. The original bridges were destroyed. A rebuilding contract was awarded on 20 February 2026, but a full reopening has not been confirmed.
Milford Road stops →Check the road on the day
The road closes in bad weather. NZTA recorded avalanche closures between Lower Hollyford Road and the Donne River from 26 to 30 August 2026. Check the current NZTA status before you leave, and carry chains in winter.
Road conditions →Parking is charged by the hour
The main car park costs NZ$10 per hour before 3 p.m. and NZ$5 per hour after. Payment is by card only. A free car park at Deepwater Basin is a 20 to 30 minute walk from the terminal.
Cruise times →No power station visit at Doubtful Sound
The underground Manapouri power station tour has been closed indefinitely. The fiord cruise still runs.
Doubtful Sound →More independent New Zealand guides
Separate guides from the same team, each focused on one place on the South Island.
Milford Sound: frequently asked questions
Do I have to pay to enter Milford Sound?
No fixed entry fee for international visitors exists at the moment. DOC is still working through the legislation for such a charge. You pay for what you book, such as a cruise, a flight or parking. The cruise page lists the parking rates.
How long does it take to drive to Milford Sound?
From Te Anau it is 120 km, at least 2 hours of driving and about 3 hours with stops, parking and the walk to the terminal. From Queenstown, one operator gives about 5 hours depending on stops. See Milford Sound from Queenstown and the Milford Road page.
Do I need to book a cruise in advance?
RealNZ recommends booking ahead. Check the departure times for your date, because winter timetables have fewer sailings than summer ones. One operator lists four departures from October to April and two from May to September.
Is it always raining at Milford Sound?
It rains a lot. Long-term averages add up to about 6.5 m a year, and even the driest month, June, averages 440 mm. Heavy rain also creates temporary waterfalls, and at least one operator sails in the rain. Read more on the weather page.
Is it better to base myself in Te Anau or Queenstown?
Te Anau is closer, about 2 hours from the fiord, and sits at the start of the Milford Road. Queenstown is about 5 hours away but has the most day-trip options. The where to stay page compares both with the lodge at Milford.
Is visitmilfordsound.org an official site?
No. This is an independent travel guide with no link to the Department of Conservation, Tourism New Zealand, NZ Transport Agency or any cruise, tour or flight operator.
