Milford Sound from Queenstown

Queenstown is about 5 hours from Milford Sound by road, so most visitors pick between a long coach day and a flight. Here is how the options compare, with 2026 prices.

Getting from Queenstown to the fiord

The Milford Sound Lodge gives about 5 hours for the drive from Queenstown to Milford, depending on stops. From Te Anau it is about 2 hours. Treat both as operator estimates, not guaranteed minimums. A return trip on the same day therefore means a very long day behind the wheel, plus the cruise.

That is why most visitors choose a coach tour, which RealNZ publishes at 12 hours including the bus and the boat, or a flight. Pure Milford sells the coach and cruise combination too. A flight cuts the day to roughly half. You can also drive yourself and book only the cruise, but plan for the full Milford Road and the parking rules described below.

The coach day

The easiest way if you do not want to drive.

RealNZ lists the Queenstown coach and cruise trip at NZ$319 for 12 hours. Pure Milford advertises NZ$276 from Queenstown, with a picnic included in its coach and cruise product. Both also start from Te Anau for less and take less time: NZ$269 and 7 hours with RealNZ, NZ$236 with Pure Milford. RealNZ names 85 Lakefront Drive in Te Anau as its central meeting point and does not promise pick-up at every hotel.

The long road is part of the day. You see the Homer Tunnel and the valley, but the stops depend on the operator. Read the Milford Road page for what is on the way, and the tours comparison for the differences in meals and times.

Flying instead

Less time on the road, more money.

Glenorchy Air

Departures are at 09:00 all year, at 11:30 from April to October and at 13:30 from November to March. Transfers to and from Queenstown Airport are included. Children aged 0 to 2 under 15 kg fly free.

Air Milford

The fares apply from 1 October 2026 to 30 September 2027. The 13:30 flight at NZ$795 runs only in summer. Add NZ$59 per person. With the surcharge, an adult pays NZ$854 or NZ$919 by calculation.

Helicopter

The Heliworks flight costs NZ$980 for ages 3 to 11 and NZ$700 for ages 0 to 2, valid from 1 April 2026 to 30 September 2027. The weather is checked 1 hour before departure, and there is no cancellation fee if the flight cannot go because of weather.

All flights depend on the weather. Details and the other flight operators are on the scenic flights page.

If you drive yourself

Check the road, the clock and the car park.

Check the current NZTA road status before you set off. The road has closed for avalanches, for example between 26 and 30 August 2026, and the return trip can be cut short by a closure. Fill the tank in Te Anau, because there is no fuel on the way, and carry water and snacks.

At the fiord, the main car park costs NZ$10 per hour for cars entering before 3 p.m. and NZ$5 per hour after that. It takes card payments only. The free Deepwater Basin car park is a 20 to 30 minute walk from the terminal, and spaces are limited. Southern Discoveries asks you to check in 20 minutes before departure, so allow time for the walk. More on the cruises page.

If the day is too long, break it up. A night in Te Anau shortens the drive to about 2 hours, as the where to stay page explains. In winter, Tracknet runs one bus each day between Te Anau and Queenstown from 2 May to 25 October 2026, departing at 08:30 or 10:00 depending on the date, with a separate summer timetable. For a longer trip on the island, getting to Mount Cook and getting to Franz Josef have their own guides.
